Aimee Henderson wins photography award!
Turley Publications wins NENPA awards
Sentinel editor takes home second place
BOSTON – Three newspapers owned by Turley Publications received four awards on Saturday, Feb. 8 from the New England Newspaper & Press Association (NENPA) for its distinguished photography, journalism and advertising during the past year. The awards, which were given out at a banquet dinner inside the grand ballroom at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, included two second place wins and two third place finishes.
Nearly 3,000 daily and weekly entries were received from across New England for NENPA’s annual Better Newspapers Contest. Expert judges chose only about 400 first, second and third place winning selections combined.
The Sentinel editor Aimee M. Henderson received second place in the Weekly Class 2 Feature Photo category for her photo that appeared on the front page of the March 21, 2013 edition of The Sentinel. The photo was of a kindergarten student catching a drop of maple sap, seen in the photo in mid-air, fresh from the tree after it was tapped during a school event.
“I am honored to be recognized in my profession by my peers with this distinguished award,” said Henderson.
The additional second place award went to Wilbraham-Hampden Times editor Charles Bennett in the Weekly Class 2 History Reporting category. Bennett did a series of ghost stories reflecting on the town’s rich history. Both Turley’s third place wins went to the Palmer Journal Register. Staff writer and photographer Emily Thurlow won in the Weekly Class 1 Photo Series for her coverage of firefighter training. Her photos captured the intensity of a scene firefighters face when they are called to the scene of an actual fire. Turley’s advertising department won for a special advertising supplement that appeared in the Palmer Journal Register celebrating Wing Memorial Hospital’s 100th anniversary.
